the Procedure, Explained

The procedure is typically performed under general, or spinal anaesthesia, and takes around two hours. Here's a simplified step-by-step breakdown:

1. You will be made comfortable using general or spinal anesthesia.
2. The surgeon makes an incision over the hip to expose the joint.
3. The damaged bone and cartilage are removed and replaced with a high-grade joint.
4. Artificial joint components are now fixed into place by your surgeon.
5. The incision is closed with meticulous care.

Stages of Recovery

Recovery from hip replacement surgery is a significant journey, and our skilled medical teams are committed to supporting you at every phase. Immediately following your procedure, if you are not discharged the same day you can expect to stay in the hospital for 1 night, where you will receive attentive care and begin initial post-operative activities under supervision.

Once home, you will need assistance with daily activities for at least the first week to ensure a safe environment as you navigate around with your new hip. You will have scheduled calls with the hospital team to check on process. Your physiotherapy guide will focus on an introduction to gentle range-of-motion exercises. Generally, you will take short, assisted walks.

Range of motion: exercises aimed at increasing the flexibility & movement of the new joint, and exercises to build muscle strength around the new joint, will be your focus. Gait training will be guided too which will help ensuring safe and effective walking techniques to promote proper joint mechanics, and prevent limping.

By the six-week mark, if you've adhered to your rehabilitation plan, significant improvements should be noticeable. The physiotherapy regimen will then include more demanding exercises focused on endurance. Low-impact activities such as stationary biking or swimming are introduced to enhance cardiovascular health without stressing the new joint.

Rehabilitation doesn’t end at three months; maintaining the function of your new joint is a lifelong endeavour. Ongoing conditioning includes engaging regularly in low-impact exercises such as walking, cycling, or aqua aerobics. Check-ups to your physiotherapist are recommended to ensure optimal joint mechanics and effectiveness of exercise routines.
